THE RAILROAD GRADE-CROSSING HAZARD ON RURAL HIGHWAYS
A STUDY OF THE 5,890 GRADE CROSSING ACCIDENTS REPORTED BY THE BUREAU OF STATISTICS OF THE INTERSTATE COMMERCE COMMISSION FOR 1926 SHOW THEM TO BE ALMOST EQUALLY DIVIDED BETWEEN URBAN AND RURAL CROSSINGS. THAT THE RURAL GRADE CROSSING ACCIDENT PROBLEM IS MORE SERIOUS THAN IS OFTEN THOUGHT IS SHOWN BY THE ESTIMATE, BASED ON MORTALITY STATISTICS OF THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU, THAT 16 PER CENT OF ALL FATALITIES RESULTING FROM RURAL HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED AT RAILWAY GRADE CROSSINGS.
