STUDIES ON TUBULAR JOINT DESIGN

The problem of designing welded tubular joints for offshore platforms is considered. Part I reviews some of the factors relevant to the design and establishes design guidelines. These guidelines are used to generate ten configurations of welded tubular T-joints. Part II describes the results of tests conducted with models of three welded tubular T-joints with different stiffening arrangements. The loading condition is limited to static compression on the branch. The simplicity of the tests prevents more generalized conclusions with regard to the usefulness of branch reinforcements. A ring stiffener on the chord wall appears to promote a more effective load transfer between the branch and chord member.
