MINNESOTA'S DRIVER AND VEHICLE RECORDS IN ONE SECOND VIA COMPUTER

THE CENTRAL TRAFFIC RECORD SERVICE CENTER IN MINNESOTA IS DESCRIBED. IT FOLLOWS THE CONCEPT RECOMMENDED BY THE AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY FOUNDATION OF INTEGRATING INTO ONE COMMON COMPUTER STORAGE DEVICE, INFORMATIONAL STATISTICS AND DATA FROM VARIOUS FIELDS OF ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THE DRIVER'S LICENSE, VEHICLE REGISTRATION, AUTO THEFT, ACCIDENT RECORDS, SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY, ARREST, LOCATION MARKING BY MILE POSTING AND ROAD RECORDS. AT FIRST, THE MINNESOTA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHED A DATA PROCESSING SERVICES SECTION WHICH MANUALLY HANDLED THE ENGINEERING AND NON-TECHNICAL DATA PROCESSING WORK, IN 1964 A COMPUTER MANUFACTURER ANNOUNCED ECONOMICALLY BULK STORAGE EQUIPMENT WITH A NEW GENERATION OF COUMPUTERS. COMPUTER PROGRAMS WERE WRITTEN TO PUT THE PRESENT DATA STORAGE SYSTEM ON COMPUTER TAPE. DATA REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ORIGINAL AND CONTINUING NEEDS WERE RECOGNIZED AND PROGRAMMED. PRESENT ACCIDENTS RECORDS INCLUDE MILE POSTING, STOLEN VEHICLE INFORMATION, DRIVER RECORDS, VEHICLE REGISTRATION, AND DRIVER LICENSES. THESE STORED RECORDS CAN BE DIRECTLY AND IMMEDIATELY RETRIEVED AS NEEDED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS OR BY MANAGEMENT OR OTHERS WHO HAVE NEED FOR AND AUTHORITYO TO OBTAIN AND USE SUCH INFORMATION.
