CAR CRASH INJURIES BY SEATING POSITION AND MILES TRAVELED

THE RISK CONNECTED WITH THE VARIOUS SEATING POSITIONS IN CARS WAS STUDIED. THE TYPES OF RISKS STUDIED INCLUDE: (1) THE RISK OF ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT WHILE VARIOUS POSITIONS ARE OCCUPIED, AND (2) THE RISK OF BEING KILLED, OR INJURIED, WHILE OCCUPYING VARIOUS SEATING POSITIONS. THE METHOD OF SURVEY CONSISTED OF MAILING QUESTIONNAIRES TO A SAMPLE OF VEHICLE OWNERS, OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, CALLING FOR MILEAGE TO BE RECORDED ON A SPECIFIED DAY AFTER RECEIPT OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE. THE ESTIMATES OF PERFORMANCE ARE BASED ON ACTUAL PERFORMANCE OF A SAMPLE OF VEHICLE OWNERS RATHER THAN ESTIMATES OF PERFORMANCE OF SAMPLED DRIVERS, OR SECONDARY SOURCES. TABULATED DATA PRESENT THE ANNUAL TOTAL MILEAGE PERFORMED BY CARS IN THE BRISBANE METROPOLITAN AREA IN 1961, CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE. DURING PEAK TRAFFIC PERIODS, THE AVERAGE CAR OCCUPANCY IS MUCH LOWER THAN DURING ANY OTHER PERIODS OF THE DAY, AND MANY MORE MILES ARE DRIVEN SOLO. THE PEAK PERIODS PRODUCE PROPORTIONALLY MANY MORE NON-CASUALTY ACCIDENTS. THESE FACTORS MAKE THE PERCENTAGES OF SOLO OCCUPANCY HIGHER IN THE NON-CASULATY ACCIDENT-INVOLVED CARS THAN IN THOSE INVOLVED IN CASUALTY ACCIDENTS, OR IN THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CARS ON THE ROADS OF BRISBANE. ANOTHER TABLE PRESENTS MILEAGE PERFORMANCE OF CARS ACCORDING TO SEATING PATTERNS. TABULAR DATA PRESENT THE NUMBER OF INJURIES SUSTAINED, ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT BY NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS, THE EFFECT OF THE DAY OF THE WEEK, THE COMBINED EFFECT OF THE AGE OF DRIVER, DAY OF WEEK OF INVOLVEMENT, AND LEVEL OF OCCUPANCY OF CAR, RELATION OF ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT BY SEATING POSITION TO MILEAGE PERFORMANCE, AND THE EFFECT OF THE AGE OF THE DRIVER OF ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT OF CARS CONSIDERED BY NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS. TABULAR DATA PRESENTS CASUALTIES BY: (1) NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS OF CAR AND THEIR SEATING POSITION, AND (2) THE EFFECT OF SEATING POSITION, AND TYPE OF ACCIDENT. CASUALTY RATES ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPHS AND TABULAR FORM FOR: (1) INVOLVEMENT RATES VERSUS CASUALTY RATES OF CAR DRIVER, (2) CASUALTY RATES OF CAR OCCUPANTS BY TYPE OF ACCIDENT, AND (3) CASUALTY RATES OF CAR OCCUPANTS BY SEATING POSITION AND THE NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS.
