RESEARCH ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR LEADS TO A DRIVER CLASSIFICATION PLAN

DRIVER BEHAVIOR WAS SYSTEMATICALLY OBSERVED OVER A PRE- DETERMINED ROUTE ON WHICH THE DRIVER WAS EXPOSED TO A TYPICAL CROSS-SECTION OF TRAFFIC SITUATIONS. TWO GROUPS OF DRIVERS WERE USED, ONE COMPOSED OF DRIVERS WHO HAD BEEN CONVICTED OF CARELESS DRIVING AND THE OTHER, DRIVERS CHOSEN AT RANDOM. IT WAS FOUND THE FIRST GROUP USED REAR-VIEW MIRRORS LESS, OVERTOOK MORE, TOOK MORE RISKS AND MADE MORE UNNECESSARY MANEUVERS. NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE GROUPS WERE FOUND IN INTELLIGENCE, PERSONALITY OR ATTITUDE TESTS. ON THE BASIS OF THE DIFFERENCES FOUND IN DRIVING BEHAVIOR, A CLASSIFICATION OF DRIVERS INTO FOUR GROUPS WAS INVOLVED: (1) SAFE, (2) INJUDICIOUS, (3) DISSOCIATED ACTIVE (LACK AWARENESS, DRIVE AT HIGH SPEEDS, OVERTAKE OFTEN, TAKE MANY RISKS), AND (4) DISSOCIATED PASSIVE (LACK AWARENESS, DRIVE SLOWLY, ARE OVERTAKEN OFTEN, FIND THEMSELVES IN POTENTIAL ACCIDENT SITUATIONS). OTHER STUDIES CARRIED OUT INCLUDED: (1) RETRAINING OF "NON-SAFE" DRIVERS (MEMBERS OF THE LATTER 3 GROUPS); AND (2) DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN SAFE AND UNSAFE DRIVERS USING REACTION TIME STRESS TESTS, TWO-HAND COORDINATION TESTS, PERCEPTIVE ABILITY AND IMPULSE CONTROL TESTS.
