FATAL ACCIDENTS ON COMPLETED SECTIONS OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM, 1968

REPORTS OF 2,754 FATAL ACCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED IN 1968 ON OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM WERE ANALYZED FROM POLICE INVESTIGATION REPORTS OBTAINED FROM THE STATES. THESE ACCIDENTS WERE DIVIDED INTO TWO BROAD CATEGORIES FOR ANALYSIS: THOSE INVOLVING A SINGLE VEHICLE, AND THOSE INVOLVING TWO OR MORE VEHICLES. THE SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS ACCOUNTED FOR TWO-THIRDS OF THE TOTAL. PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS ACCOUNTED FOR MORE THAN 7 PERCENT OF THE ACCIDENTS. THESE 2,754 ACCIDENTS RESULTED IN 3,326 FATALITIES OR 1.21 DEATHS PER ACCIDENT. SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS RESULTED IN AN AVERAGE OF 1.14 FATALITIES PER ACCIDENT, WHICH CORRESPONDED TO 1.35 FATALITIES PER ACCIDENT IN MULTIPLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS. HEAD-ON COLLISIONS CAUSED BY WORNG-WAY DRIVERS PRODUCED THE HIGHEST FATALITY RATE, 1.76 PER ACCIDENT. MEANS SUGGESTED BY THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL WERE USED TO ESTIMATE THE ECONOMIC LOSS IN FATAL ACCIDENTS. THE FATAL ACCIDENTS ARE TABULATED BY LIGHT CONDITIONS AND ACCIDENT ENVIRONMENT. MORE THAN FOUR-FIFTHS OF THE DRIVERS PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FATAL ACCIDENTS WERE MALES. HOWEVER, MALES CONSTITUTED 58.5 PERCENT OF ALL LICENSED DRIVERS. THE AVAILABLE REPORTS INDICATED THAT 23.6 PERCENT OF THE DRIVERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACCIDENTS HAD BEEN DRINKING. A SUMMARY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS IS PRESENTED IN A TABLE.
