AUTOMATED ACCIDENT ANALYSIS SYSTEM
IN PENNSYLVANIA, THE STATE POLICE ACCIDENT REPORTS, MUNICIPAL POLICE REPORTS, AND DRIVER'S REPORTS OF VEHICLE ACCIDENTS ARE COLLATED WITHIN THE BUREAU OF TRAFFIC SAFETY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE. ALL REPORTS PERTAINING TO THE SAME ACCIDENT ARE GROUPED TOGETHER AND FORWARDED TO THE DIVISION OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENT ANALYSIS IN THE BUREAU OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING FOR INDIVIDUAL ANALYSIS AND ALL SUBSEQUENT PROCESSING. ACCIDENT DATA CODING METHODS USED ARE PRESENTED. ALL DATA FOR EACH ACCIDENT ARE RECORDED ON A SINGLE CODING SHEET, FROM WHICH IT IS DIRECTLY WRITTEN ONTO LOW DENSITY MAGNETIC TAPE. FROM THE COMPUTERED TAPE, TWO BASIC TYPES OF SUMMARY REPORTS ARE PRODUCED: (1) STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF ACCIDENT DATA, AND (2) ACCIDENT LOCATION INFORMATION. THE ROAD LOG FILE IS MATCHED WITH THE MAGNETIC TAPE PERTAINING TO LOCATIONS OF ACCIDENTS TO DEVELOP THE FOLLOWING REPORTS: (1) A "CLUSTER" REPORT OF HIGH ACCIDENT LOCATIONS, (2) AN "IMPROBABLE RATE" ACCIDENT LOCATION REPORT, AND (3) A SERIES OF COLLISION DIAGRAMS WHICH CAN BE DRAWN BY THE COMPUTER.
