Hand in hand
The Peace Bridge, a new foot and cycle suspension structure linking two historically separate communities, is complete. It connects the two banks of the River Foyle in Derry-Londonderry, one of the main cities in Northern Ireland, and is intended to reunite two communities past divided by politics. The project is being funded through the EU Peace III Shared Space programme. The design of the bridge was challenging as it required both a symbolic strength (it is supposed to represent two linked arms), as well as overcoming the physical constraints of needing to connect strong horizontal axes on each side of the river, which did not coincide naturally. Details of the design itself are presented.
