RELATIONSHIP OF ACCIDENT RATE TO HIGHWAY SHOULDER WIDTH

A SUMMARY OF ACCIDENT DATA FOR EACH CONTROL SECTION OF THE STATE-MAINTAINED HIGHWAY SYSTEM IN CONNECTICUT WAS USED TO STUDY THE RELATIONSHIP OF SHOULDER WIDTH TO HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS. PUNCH CARDS INCLUDE THE DATA FROM THE SUMMARY ON LENGTH OF SECTION, ANNUAL, AVERAGE, DAILY TRAFFIC VOLUME AND ANNUAL VEHICLE MILES, NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS, FATAL ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES AND INJURIES, AMOUNT OF PROPERTY DAMAGE, PAVEMENT, SHOULDER AND MEDIAN WIDTH AND TYPE, AND HIGHWAY TYPE AND SYSTEM. DATA ON THE PUNCH CARDS ANALYZED INDICATE THAT AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC VOLUMES HAVE A GENERAL RELATIONSHIP TO THE PAVEMENT, SHOULDER, AND TOTAL SURFACE WIDTHS, BUT THERE IS NO RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ACCIDENT RATE. THESE DATA SHOW NO SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACCIDENT RATE AND SHOULDER WIDTH.
