Loading to the beat of the same drum
Through an initiative called Drumbeat, significant improvements have been made in terms of efficiency to the Pilbara rail network in Western Australia. The initiative involved optimization of train loading operations at the Yandicoogina iron-ore mine. Mining heavyweight Rio Tinto's rail system connects 12 mines with three shipping terminals. It is the largest privately-owned heavy-haul freight rail network in Australia. Mine to port logistics operations are of the utmost importance to Rio Tinto, and Drumbeat enabled the Yandicoogina team to deal with the issue of discrepancy between estimated and actual wagon load weights during train loading at the mine and port. A weighing system was chosen using two separate Schenck Process Multirail train scales, resulting in more efficient operations.
