HIGHWAY ACCIDENT ANALYSIS THROUGH USE OF IBM PUNCH CARDS
CODING AND PREPARATION OF PUNCH CARDS OF INFORMATION FROM TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RECORDS IN TEXAS ARE DESCRIBED. MILEPOST DATA ARE USED TO SHOW THE LOCATION OF THE ACCIDENT IN THE CODE. ACCIDENT DATA MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO COMPUTE ACCIDENT RATES FOR EACH OF THE 5,000 SECTIONS OF THE TEXAS HIGHWAY SYSTEM. THESE RATE CALCULATIONS ARE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE ADAPTABILITY OF IBM PUNCH CARDS IN ACCIDENT ANALYSES. THE MASTER TABULATION PROVIDES THE DISTRICTS WITH INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO SPECIFIC LOCATIONS, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO CONSTRUCT COLLISION DIAGRAMS. THE MECHANICS OF THE SYSTEM OPERATE SMOOTHLY AND DISTRICTS SEEM TO BE MAKING CONSIDERABLE USE OF THE INFORMATION FURNISHED THEM.
