DIRECT DIGITAL CONTROL OF A MARINE GAS TURBINE PROPULSION PLANT WITH CONTROLLABLE-REVERSIBLE PITCH PROPELLER
A representative control algorithm for the control of a marine gas turbine propulsion plant with a controllable-reversible pitch propeller was developed. The controller development was carried out digitally using a digital simulation of the installation. The simulation utilized the DYSYS (DYnamic SYstem Simulation) Program on an Interdata 70 computer. The general control scheme involves a constant shaft speed range of operation at low speeds over which propeller pitch-diameter ratio is changed for ship speed control and a constant pitch-diameter range (after maximum pitch has been attained) over which shaft speed is changed to control ship speed. Steady-state regulation is on shaft speed and propeller pitch-diameter ratio. Considerations of frame time and computer core requirement are discussed. Results of real time tests on the developed algorithm are presented. Finally, results are presented graphically for various accelerations and decelerations and for an emergency crash-back maneuver. Appropriate comments for each trial are included.
