SAFETY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

ROADSIDE SAFETY AND SPOT SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED. ADEQUATE SIGNING IS NECESSARY FOR A PROJECT PRIOR TO OPENING TO TRAFFIC. MEDIAN WIDTHS AND BARRIER PROTECTION IN NARROW MEDIANS ARE VERY IMPORTANT. A MEDIAN WITH A BARRIER DOWN THE CENTER IS A SAFER FACILITY THAN ONE WITHOUT A BARRIER, UNLESS THE WIDTH IS SUFFICIENT TO HAVE A 30-FOOT CLEAR AREA FROM EACH PAVEMENT EDGE. THE USE IS ENCOURAGED OF THE GM TYPE BARRIER IN MEDIANS ALONG ROADWAYS WITH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF TRAFFIC. RESULTS OF VEHICLE STRIKES ALONG THE BOX BEAM TYPE MEDIAN PROTECTION HAVE BEEN ENCOURAGING. THE PLACEMENT OF A GUARD RAIL IS RECOMMENDED WITH FACE FLUSH WITH EDGE OF PAVED SHOULDER. GUIDELINES ARE BEING DEVELOPED FOR UPGRADING HIGHWAYS. THE MANUAL OF UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES ADEQUATELY COVERS SIGNING AND MARKING THROUGH CONSTRUCTION ZONES. A COMBINATION OF GOOD ENGINEERING JUDGEMENT AND COMPLIANCE WITH THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THIS MANUAL SHOULD GIVE THE PUBLIC ALL THE NECESSARY DIRECTIONS AND MARKINGS TO SAFELY TRAVEL THROUGH CONSTRUCTION ZONES.
