THE GEORGES BANK PETROLEUM STUDY

Potential impacts on regional income and environment caused by hypothetical exploration and development of Georges Bank petroleum is the subject of the extensive work which represents the findings of a year-long study by a group of M.I.T. faculty and staff. The purpose of the study is not to advise New England on its offshore policy, but rather to "develop a reliable information base for rational discussion" among interested and diverse groups and to provide the "information and analytic tools by which regional authorities can approach relevant state and federal policy decisions." Possible oil finds in combination with hypothetical refinery locations, foreign crude prices, import quotas and natural gas pricing policies are explored to determine implications of various combinations.
