Influence of Traffic Safety on Road Alignment Design

Because of the development of national economy, the ownership of automobiles is rising rapidly, which is associated with an upward trend in traffic accidents. Road safety has become a problem which needs urgent solution. In the previous year's traffic accident analyzed the subject factors of automobiles and drivers were given considerable attention. However, the important role of road was neglected. This paper presents the effect of alignment of road on traffic safety, pointing out that the design of road alignment directly affects the vehicle safety. An unreasonable design may lead to difficult driving conditions and even terrible traffic accidents. The factors which may influence traffic safety are analyzed from different kind of planes, vertical and combination alignment aspects. Besides, complying with the principle of “people-oriented and safety first”, a solution is provided to improve the design of the road alignment.
