A REVIEW OF SAFETY FEATURES APPLIED TO FREEWAYS
WITH INCREASING VOLUMES AND THE HIGHER SPEEDS NOW PERMITTED ON HIGHWAYS, THE ACCIDENT TOLL RISES INEXORABLY YEAR BY YEAR. THIS TREND WILL CONTINUE IN DIRECT PROPORTION TO TRAFFIC VOLUMES UNLESS IT IS OFFSET BY A LOWER INCIDENCE OF ACCIDENTS PER UNIT OF VEHICLE MILES. CONTROLLED ACCESS EXPRESSWAYS, THOUGH THEY HAVE THE SAFEST RECORD PER UNIT OF VEHICLE MILES, ACCOUNT FOR A LARGE PROPORTION OF HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS, BECAUSE THEY CARRY THE HIGHEST VOLUMES OF TRAFFIC. OVER THE PAST DECADE, A VAST AMOUNT OF RESEARCH ON HIGHWAY SAFETY HAS BEEN CONCENTRATED ON ACCIDENT REDUCTION ON EXPRESSWAYS. EXTENSIVE ACCIDENT DATA RECORDING MAKES IT POSSIBLE NOW TO MORE RELIABLY DETERMINE ACCIDENT CAUSE. THE ACCIDENT HISTORIES OF SECTIONS OF HIGHWAY, WITH VARYING GEOMETRIC FEATURES, HAVE BEEN COMPARED. MODEL AND DYNAMIC TESTS HAVE TESTED THE EFFICIENCIES OF SEVERAL TYPES OF PROTECTIVE DEVICES. THIS RESEARCH IS DISCUSSED AND RELATED TO THE SELECTION OF ROADWAY CROSS-SECTIONS, THE DESIGN AND LOCATION OF ESSENTIAL STRUCTURES AND THE CHOICE OF PROTECTIVE DEVICES. /AUTHOR/
