A STUDY OF IMPERMEABLE MEMBRANES FOR THE ISOLATION OF OIL FROM SEAWATER BALLAST IN TANKERS
A study was undertaken to determine the best method for keeping oil and other cargoes separated from sea water ballast in tankers. The solution found involved the use of an impermeable membrane which was fitted around the vertical center line of certain tanks in such a way as to take on half of the inside shape of the tank. The membrane is to be constructed from a nylon fabric reinforcement sandwiched between two layers of Nitrile rubber. Also presented within this report is the means by which the membrane should be attached to the tank walls forming a watertight seal.
