SHORT-RANGE EDM: BIG BOOST FOR SURVEYORS
ALTHOUGH ELECTRONIC DISTANCE MEASURING (EDM) EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, ITS HIGH COST AND INACCURACY FOR DISTANCES UNDER TWO KM KEPT IT OUT OF THE RANGE OF INDIVIDUAL SURVEYORS ULTIL RECENTLY. DEVELOPMENT OF THE GALLIUM ARSENIDE DIODE IN 1963 MADE POSSIBLE THE PRODUCTION OF LOW-COST, SHORT-RANGE EDM EQUIPMENT. MARKETS FOR THIS EQUIPMENT ARE STILL IN AN EMBROYONIC STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT, BUT THERE ARE VARIOUS APPLICATIONS IN ENGINEERING SURVEYING AND LAND SURVEYING THAT SHOULD MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE TO SMALL FIRMS. GENERALLY SPEAKING, SHORT-RANGE EDM EQUIPMENT CAN SUBSTITITE FOR STEEL TAPE ON MOST JOBS. THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT AND A NUMBER OF PRIVATE FIRMS ARE ALREADY USING SUCH EQUIPMENT. /AUTHOR/
