TUNGSTEN CARBIDE UNDERBODY BLADES REDUCE EQUIPMENT DOWNTIME, SAVE ON CHEMICALS
A STUDY WAS MADE BY THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF STATE HIGHWAY TO EVALUATE TUNGSTEN CARBIDE SCRAPER BLADES ON TRUCK UNDER-BODY MOLDBOARDS UNDER ACTUAL WINTER MAINTENANCE CONDITIONS. POLYETHYLENE AND RUBBER BLADES WERE ALSO TESTED FOR DURABILITY. RESULTS OF THIS COMPARISON WERE EQUATED WITH LABOR AND MATERIAL COSTS TO DETERMINE THE MOST ECONOMICAL BLADE FOR USE THROUGH THE STATE. TUNGSTEN CARBIDE TIPPED BLADES WERE JUDGED TO BE AS EFFECTIVE OR MORE SO THAN CONVENTIONAL BLADES IN REMOVING ALL TYPES OF ICE AND SNOW. WEAR RESISTANCE WAS EXCELLENT. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THESE BLADES BE USED FOR SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL, BUT NOT FOR GRADING OF GRAVEL ROADS OR SHOULDERS WHERE FACE WEAR WILL OCCUR AND LOOSEN THE INSERTS. /AUTHOR/
