The Effects of Deteriorating Bridges on Bridges on the Bridge Network Connectivity
Evaluation of the seismic reliability of aging transportation networks traditionally ignores the deteriorating state of highway bridges. In this study, the present day seismic reliability of bridges in an existing highway network has been evaluated through a time-dependent seismic fragility analysis. An efficient Monte Carlo based algorithm is used to evaluate the network-level reliability of the aging highway bridges without the need to simplify the network layout or change its topology. The criticality of aging bridges is then assessed through different ranking strategies proposed in this study to arrive at an optimized seismic retrofit schedule. The methodology is implemented in a case in the state of South Carolina under a seismic scenario and the proposed ranking strategies are compared to the state of practice methods.
