AIR POLLUTION ABATEMENT

PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE PRESENT AND POTENTIAL HAZARD FROM AIR CONTAMINATION AND THE NEEDS FOR POLLUTION CONTROLS WERE ENCOURAGED BY THE CLEAN AIR ACT OF 1965. CRITERIA ARE BEING ESTABLISHED TO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF UNIFORM STANDARDS FOR COMPARABLE RAILROAD OPERATIONS PERFORMED AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON INTERSTATE SYSTEMS OR THROUGHOUT THE RAILROAD INDUSTRY. GENERAL CONSIDERATION FOR CONTAMINATION CONTROL ARE DISCUSSED FOR INDUSTRIAL EMISSIONS-SMOKE, FUMES, GASES, AND DUST FROM POWER PLANTS, SHOPS, AND PROCESSING FACILITIES. COMBUSTION ENGINE EXHAUSTS ARE EXCLUDED FROM THE TYPICAL REGULATIONS FOR GENERAL AIR POLLUTION AND MOBILE EQUIPMENT OR MOVING SOURCES OF CONTAMINATION. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE REGULATIONS SPECIFY TECHNICAL DETAILS OF SAMPLING, TESTING, CONTROL PROCEDURES, AND OPERATIONS OF FACILITIES. THIS WORK SHOULD PROVIDE A BASIS FOR ADEQUATE CONTROL CONTAMINATION FROM RAILROAD OPERATIONS. THE SUCCESS OF THE WORK WILL DEPEND ON REPRESENTATION AND INFORMATION FROM RAILROADS OPERATING IN AREAS WHERE VARIATIONS OF CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR AIR POLLUTION CONTROL ARE PREVALENT.
