WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT VIBRATION
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL METHODS OF CONCRETE VIBRATION ARE REVIEWED. COMPACTION BY VIBRATION IS USED BY MOST CONTRACTORS BUT MANY CONTRACTORS AND INSPECTORS DO NOT KNOW WHAT CONSTITUTES ADEQUATE VIBRATION. MOST OF THE CONCRETE VIBRATORS USED IN GENERAL CONSTRUCTION WORK ARE OF THE ROTARY TYPE. THE CONCRETE MIX HAS CONSIDERABLE EFFECT ON THE VIBRATION REQUIREMENTS. BETTER COMPACTION IS OBTAINED NEAR THE BOTTOM THAN THE TOP OF LIFTS, AND APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE TOP OF A LIFT DURING THE VIBRATION HAS OFTEN HELPED. HOWEVER, AS LIFTS BECOME THICKER IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO ASSURE THOROUGH, SYSTEMATIC PENETRATION OF THE CONCRETE WITH THE VIBRATOR. WITH PROPER MIX DESIGN, AND BY AVOIDING EXCESSIVELY LONG VIBRATION TIMES, THE TENDENCY FOR SEGRATION DURING VIBRATION SHOULD NOT BE OBJECTIONABLE.
