SPECIAL DISTRIBUTOR GETS JOB STARTED FAST

KANSAS, WITH A 10,000-MILE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTRUCTED WITH BITUMINOUS-TYPE SURFACES, CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF THE FREQUENCY, SIZE AND EXTENT OF THE REPAIRS NECESSARY EACH SEASON TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF MEN AND TYPES OF EQUIPMENT REQUIRED. THE STUDY SHOWED A NEED FOR AN ASPHALT DISTRIBUTOR FOR APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES OF 2-LANE ROADWAY. IF THE DISTRIBUTOR WERE TO ACCOMPLISH THE TASKS EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY, IT MUST BE LARGE ENOUGH TO EFFECT A MAJOR REPAIR AND ALSO BE EFFECTIVE IN ACCOMPLISHING MINOR REPAIRS EFFICIENTLY. A 600-GALLON UNIT WAS SELECTED AS BEING THE MOST VERSATILE SIZE. A THREE-LEVEL SUCTION LINE TAKE-OFF WAS DESIGNED ALLOWING THE OPERATOR TO REMOVE HOT ASPHALT FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK ALMOST IMMEDIATELY WHILE THE REMAINDER OF THE CONTENTS ARE COLD. SINCE KANSAS ADOPTED A POLICY ELIMINATING TOWED-TYPE EQUIPMENT FROM HIGHWAY OPERATIONS, THE DISTRIBUTOR WAS INSTALLED ON A LIGHT TRUCK CHASSIS EQUIPPED WITH SAFETY FEATURES. SINCE THE ASPHALT DISTRIBUTOR MAY BE CONSIDERED THE MOST IMPORTANT REPAIR TOOL TO THE MAINTENANCE ENGINEER, THERE SHOULD BE A CONSTANT EFFORT TOWARD ITS IMPROVEMENT.
