HISTORY OF ANTI-SKID PROGRAM MANAGEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES

CURRENT STANDARDS FOR SKID RESISTANCE ARE BASED LARGELY ON SKID TRAILER TESTS. SOME OF THE STANDARDS PRESENTLY IN USE ARE CRITICALLY PRESENTED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPREHENSIVE ANTI-SKID PROGRAMS IS A MATTER NOT ONLY OF DEVELOPING TEST-METHOD AND SKID RESISTANCE STANDARDS BUT OF ARRIVING AT RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS AS WELL. AREAS IN SPECIAL NEED OF RESEARCH ARE ANNUAL ACCIDENT STUDIES TO LOCATE HIGH RISK LOCATIONS, MEASUREMENT OF SKID RESISTANCE OF SUCH LOCATIONS, AND STUDIES TO RESOLVE THE STUDDED-TIRE CONTROVERSY.
