BRIDGE INSPECTOR TRAINING AND ITS RESULTS
IN 1970 ALL OF FLORIDA'S 4000 BRIDGES WERE RATED IN RESPONSE TO FHWA AND STATE REQUIREMENTS RESPECTING FEDERAL-AID AND STATE HIGHWAYS. THE LACK OF UNIFORMITY AND MISPLACED EMPHASES PERSUADED THE FLORIDA DOT, IN COOPERATION WITH GEORGIA AND LOUISIANA, TO APPLY TO FHWA FOR FUNDING OF A TRAINING PROGRAM, LATER CALLED THE "PILOT DEMONSTRATION PROJECT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A BRIDGE INSPECTOR TRAINING PROGRAM." THE MANNER IN WHICH THE PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED, ITS CONTENT, AND IMMEDIATE RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED.
