SURFACE CLEANING AND PRETREATING OF STEEL FOR HIGHWAY USE
SOME OF THE NEWER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CLEANING AND PRETREATING OF STEEL SURFACES PRIOR TO PAINTING ARE DISCUSSED. THEY INCLUDE CHEMICAL CLEANERS, ULTRASONIC CLEANING, NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN MECHANICAL CLEANING PROCESSES, THE TREND TOWARD JELLY-TYPE CHEMICAL TREATMENTS OR DESCALING IN THE FIELD, AND OTHERS. SPECIFICATIONS FOR MANY CLEANING AND PRETREATING PROCESSES ARE LISTED. SOME OF THE TECHNIQUES AND PRECAUTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH VARIOUS CLEANING METHODS ARE DISCUSSED. THE ECONOMIC VLAUE OF PROPER CLEANING AND PRETREATING HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. THE LIFE OF PROPERLY CLEANED SURFACES VERSUS UNCLEANED SURFACES IS PRESENTED, BASED ON A NUMBER OF FIELD PAINT TESTS. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HIGHWAY USE ARE MADE. /AUTHOR/
