PROGRESS REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL
A SECOND REPORT OF A MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT SUB-COMMITTEE ON MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL RECOMMENDS THAT ATTENTION BE GIVEN THE RELATIVE SALARIES OF WAGES BEING PAID FOR MAINTENANCE JOBS IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS SUCH A WIDE VARIATION IN AMOUNTS PAID THE SAME JOB IN THE VARIOUS STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS. THE REPORT FURTHER RECOMMENDS THAT GOOD WORK BY THE MAINTENANCE EMPLOYEE BE REWARDED AND ENCOURAGED BY CONTINUITY OF SERVICE, A SALARY OR WAGE LEVEL COMPARABLE TO THAT PAID BY PRIVATE INDUSTRY FOR SIMILAR WORK, A RETIREMENT PLAN, WORKMAN'S COMPENSATION, VACATION AND SICK LEAVE WITH PAY, AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS WHICH WOULD PROVIDE A BETTER EMPLOYEE, TO THE END THAT BETTER AND CHEAPER MAINTAINED HIGHWAYS WILL RESULT. /AUTHOR/
