REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON MAINTENANCE COSTS
A UNIFORM SYSTEM OF MAINTENANCE COST KEEPING WAS APPLIED TO 18, 154 MILES OF ROADS IN 47 STATES. THE TOTAL ANNUAL MAINTENANCE WAS $471.32 PER MILE, OF WHICH $194.48 WAS FOR SURFACE, $66.67 FOR SHOULDERS AND APPROACHES, $107.13 FOR ROADSIDE, DRAINAGE AND STRUCTURES, AND $103.04 FOR TRAFFIC SERVICES. AN AVERAGE OF 45 PERCENT WAS SPENT FOR LABOR, 21 PERCENT FOR MATERIALS, 25 PERCENT FOR EQUIPMENT AND 9 PERCENT FOR OVERHEAD. NORMAL SURFACE MAINTENANCE COSTS WERE LOWER FOR 20 FT. PAVEMENTS THAN FOR 18 FT. PAVEMENTS BECAUSE OF THE GREATER AGE, MORE FREQUENT EDGE FAILURES, AND SHOULDER EFFECTS OF THE NARROWER WIDTH. SURFACE MAINTENANCE COSTS INCREASED WITH TRAFFIC. /AUTHOR/
