THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE AS A DUST PALLIATIVE AND ITS VALUE TO GENERAL ROAD MAINTENANCE

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE PROGRESS MADE IN 1931 ON PROJECTS IN THE STATES OF MISSOURI AND SOUTH CAROLINA. COMPARATIVE TESTS SHOW THE RATE OF EVAPORATION TO BE MUCH SLOWER FROM TREATED THAN FROM UNTREATED SURFACES. MECHANICAL ANALYSES OF SAMPLES FROM ROAD SURFACES REVEALED A WIDE VARIATION IN TEXTURE WHICH WAS ALSO MANIFESTED IN THE RATE OF EVAPORATION TESTS. BASED ON THIS PRELIMINARY WORK, THE REPORT INCLUDES AN OUTLINE FOR THE CONTINUING STUDY OF THIS PROBLEM. /AUTHOR/
