LATEST DEVELOPMENTS OF "IN-PLACE" TREATMENT OF TIMBER BRIDGES
THE CAUSE AND MECHANISM OF WOOD DECAY IS DISCUSSED IN ORDER TO MAKE MORE EFFECTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMS UTILIZING IN-PLACE TREATMENT. SINCE PENTACHLOROPHENOL IS THE PRESERVA- TIVE USED FOR IN-PLACE TREATMENT, ITS THRESHOLD VALUE IS DISCUSSED. THRESHOLD IS DEFINED AS THE MINIMUM AMMOUNT OF PRESERVATIVE WHICH EFFECTIVELY STOPS FUNGI GROWTH. A METHOD IS EXPLAINED FOR DETERMINING THRESHOLD VALUES. THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT OF IN-PLACE TREATMENT OF TIMBER BRIDGES IS SUMMARIZED AS FOLLOWS: (1) THE KNOWLEDGE OF INTERNAL DECAY IN TIMBER BRIDGES HAS INCREASED CONSIDERABLY, (2) THIS HAS LED TO IMPROVED METHODS OF INSPECTION AND IN-PLACE TREATMENT, AND (3) NOW THAT SEVERAL HUNDRED BRIDGES HAVE BEEN TREATED IN-PLACE OVER A PERIOD OF 15 YEARS WITH EFFECTIVE RESULTS, AND NOW THAT LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF THESE RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE, THE IN-PLACE TREATMENT CAN NO LONGER BE CLASSIFIED AS EXPERIMENTAL AND ITS USE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN OVERALL BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM.
