NEW SALT BLEND HAS GOOD ABRASIVE ACTION AND FAST ICE-MELTING PROPERTIES
THE SALT INDUSTRY HAS DEVELOPED A NEW BLEND OF COARSE PARTICLES PLUS SUFFICIENT FINE SALT TO PROVIDE INSTANT TRACTION OVER ICE AND SNOW AND GIVE RAPID MELTING ACTION. THE MATERIAL IS A BLEND OF 75 PERCENT COARSE-CRUSHED ROCK SALT AND 25 PERCENT FINE-CRUSHED. THE COMBINATION OF PARTICLE SIZES NOT ONLY GIVES TRACTION AND QUICK MELTING, BUT IT IS EASILY TRANSPORTED, HANDLED, STORED AND APPLIED THROUGH EXISTING SPREADER EQUIPMENT. THE ABRASIVE QUALITIES HAVE BEEN TESTED OF ORDINARY ROCK SALT AND HIGHWAY TEST SALT FOR THE PAST TWO WINTERS. THE DEMONSTRATION THAT HIGHWAY TEST SALT PROVIDES TRACTION AT LEAST EQUIVALENT TO SAND OR CINDERS IS IMPORTANT. RESEARCH RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION FOR GLARE ICE DECREASES WITH DECREASING TEMPERATURE, THE COEFFICIENT FOR COARSE-CRUSHED SALT IMMEDIATELY AFTER APPLICATION WAS GREATER THAN EITHER SAND OR CINDERS, THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION FOR THE COARSE- CRUSHED SALT DECREASED TO A VALUE GREATER THAN SAND LESS THAN CINDERS, AND HIGHWAY TEST SALT PRODUCES A HIGHER COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION THAN COARSE-CRUSHED ROCK SALT ALONE. THIS NEW MATERIAL FOR WINTER-MAINTENANCE NEEDS APPEARS TO GIVE MOTORISTS INITIAL TRACTION, AND RAPIDLY MELTS ICE AND SNOW.
