FUTURE SURFACE TECHNOLOGY
Technologies for future high speed inter-city ground transit systems are reviewed. The suspension systems considered are tracked air cushion vehicles and magnetic levitation using either attractive or repulsive forces. The non-contact propulsion techniques discussed are turbines and linear electric induction and synchronous motors. Characteristics summarized include clearances, inherent stability, suspension induced drag, necessities for high speed wayside power collection, safety, pollution, state of development and suitability for automatic control.
