Second national survey of Australian bitumens
A database of properties of Australian bitumens is being assembled. This database will be useful in identifying trends in properties associated with recent changes in the manufacture of Australian bitumens. It will also be useful for evaluating future bitumen alternatives or extenders which will become necessary as oil reserves are depleted. Thirty-one bitumens from around Australia were subjected to a range of test procedures. These included viscosity measurement at a range of temperatures, durability testing, chemical composition, determination of softening point and penetration and the calculation of various derived parameters. Almost half the bitumens failed to comply with specifications. While the properties of C170 bitumens were generally satisfactory, there were concerns with C320 bitumens.
