SWITCH HEATERS AND OTHER DEVICES OR MACHINES FOR REMOVING SNOW FROM SWITCHES
A NUMBER OF SWITCH HEATERS DESIGNED TO REMOVE SNOW FROM SWITCHES HAVE BEEN TESTED. THESE INCLUDED GAS-FIRED AND FIXED, INFRARED RADIATION HEATERS. PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS ARE BEING UNDERTAKEN BY THE NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF CANADA IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CANADIAN PACIFIC AND CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS WHERE SWITCHES HAVE BEEN TESTED AT TEMPERATURES DOWN TO -25 F WITH SNOWFALL OF 1 INCH PER HOUR AND WINDS AT 45 MPH WITH SATISFACTORY RESULTS. MOREOVER, THE CONTROL OF HEATERS BY MEANS OF SNOW DETECTORS ARE BEING STUDIED.
