A SURVEY OF AIR-ENTRAINED STRUCTURES IN ILLINOIS

AN INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED INTO THE DISINTEGRATION OF CONCRETE BRIDGES IN ILLINOIS BUILT FROM 1947 TO 1959 INCLUSIVE. BRIDGES BUILT WITH AIR-ENTRAINED CONCRETE WERE INSPECTED TO DETERMINE: (1) THE EXTENT TO WHICH DISINTEGRATION HAS DEVELOPED, (2) WHETHER THE DISTRESS IS ASSOCIATED WITH A LACK OF AIR, (3) WHAT REMEDIAL MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN TO RETARD THE DISINTEGRATION ALREADY STARTED AND (4) WHAT PREVENTIVE MEASURES SHOULD BE TAKEN ON NEW STRUCTURES. DATA WERE COLLECTED ON THE FIRST TWO PHASES OF THE INSPECTION AND WERE PLACED ON IBM CARDS TO FACILITATE ANALYSIS. OF THE 503 ORIGINAL BRIDGES, 6 TO 13% SHOWED SCALING IN VARYING DEGREES IN THE DECK, GUTTER, HUBGUARD, AND SIDEWALK. AGGREGATE POPOUTS WERE PRESENT IN 11 TO 54% OF THE STRUCTURES. IN THE DECK, 26% SHOWED A FEW SCATTERED POPOUTS, 18% SHOWED NUMEROUS POPOUTS, 6% WERE CLASSIFIED AS EXCESSIVE, AND IN 4% THE POPOUTS HAD CAUSED FAILURE OF THE SURFACE. ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE THAT ICE REMOVAL SALTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE TO THE STRUCTURES, NEVERTHELESS THERE ARE SOME SIGNIFICANT INDICATIONS THAT WARRANT CONSIDERATION. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT ALL-OUT EFFORTS MUST BE MADE TO IMPROVE AND INSURE THE QUALITY OF CONCRETE USED IN STRUCTURES AND PAVEMENTS. PROTECTIVE COATINGS AND INHIBITORS NEED TO BE DEVELOPED AND SEARCH MUST BE CONDUCTED FOR ICE-REMOVAL AGENTS THAT ARE LESS CORROSIVE.
