RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE SLABS EXPOSED AS BRIDGE DECKS TO SCALING CAUSED BY DEICING AGENTS

A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF THE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE SLABS EXPOSED OUTDOOR FOR PERIODS UP TO THREE YEARS. THIS STUDY DETERMINED THE RESISTANCE TO SCALING OF CONCRETE SURFACES IN A SIMULATED BRIDGE DECK ENVIRONMENT. THE FINDINGS REPORTED ARE BASED ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SLABS MOUNTED ON COLUMNS SO THAT BOTH THE TOP AND BOTTOM SURFACES WERE EXPOSED TO THE AIR AS IN THE CASE OF BRIDGE DECKS. THE SLABS WERE SUBJECTED TO AN AVERAGE OF FORTY-SEVEN CYCLES OF FREEZING OF WATER ON THE SURFACE FOLLOWED BY THAWING WITH DEICING AGENTS DURING EACH WINTER. IT IS DOUBTFUL THAT AN EQUIVALENT NUMBER OF DEICER APPLICATIONS WOULD BE MADE EACH WINTER ON BRIDGE DECKS IN MOST AREAS, SO THAT PERFORMANCE OVER A TWO OR THREE YEAR PERIOD AS DISCUSSED IS PROBABLY MORE SEVERE THAN IN ACTUAL PRACTICE. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH 17 DIFFERENT SURFACE COATINGS, 10 DIFFERENT ADMIXTURES, VARIABLE SLUMP AND AIR CONTENT, AND VARIABLES IN THE FOLLOWING: BITUMINOUS CONCRETE WEARING SURFACE ON PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE, DEPTH OF REINFORCING STEEL IN CONCRETE, LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE CONCRETE, AND EXPANSIVE CEMENT CONCRETE.
