LABOR ECONOMIES IN ORGANIZING MECHANIZED FORCES FOR TRACK MAINTENANCE

A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED OF 47 RAILROADS IN THE U.S. AND CANADA. RESPONSE FROM 29 OF THESE WAS CONSID- ERED SUFFICIENT TO PROVIDE A REPRESENTATIVE CROSS SECTION. RESULTS INDICATE THAT A REDUCTION IN LABOR COST PER TRACK MILE, OFFSET BY AN INCREASE IN THE TRACK-LABOR RATE, PLUS AN INCREASE IN THE COST PER TRACK MILE OF ROADWAY MACHINES, RESULTED IN A DECREASED LABOR COST OF MAINTENANCE PER TRACK MILE. HOWEVER, LABOR INSTALLED LESS MATERIAL IN 1964 THAN IN 1950. THE MANUFACTURERS OF RAILROAD EQUIPMENT CONTINUE VIGOROUSLY TO DEVELOP IMPROVED MACHINES TO FURTHER INCREASE ECONOMIES OF MAINTENANCE IN ORDER TO COMPETE WITH OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORTATION.
