Applications of Wavelet Analysis in Compression of Quasiperiodic Signals
This paper presents an algorithm for quasi-periodic signal compression using wavelet analysis and linear prediction. The algorithm is used for ECG compression. The algorithm begins with the segmentation of quasi-periodic signal. A period and amplitude normalization of each period are then performed. In the case of ECG, the R wave for the signal segmentation is detected. For these vectors the wavelet analysis is applied and the first level of compression is obtained by eliminating the lowest coefficients of the wavelet transform. The second level of compression is achieved by applying for the rest of the coefficients the linear prediction to reduce the number of bits for each coefficient. The algorithm was implemented in Matlab and a wavelet family was chosen to obtain a better ratio of compression than those reported.
