BENKELMAN BEAM-AUXILIARY INSTRUMENT OF THE MAINTENANCE ENGINEER
IT IS DEMONSTRATED THAT DEFLECTIONS MEASURED BY A BENKELMAN BEAM CAN ASSIST THE MAINTENANCE ENGINEER IN EVALUATING THE STRUCTURAL CONDITION OF PAVEMENTS IN TERMS OF REQUIRED MAINTENANCE. METHODS OF MEASURING DEFLECTION USING THE BENKELMAN BEAM ARE DESCRIBED. THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE METHODS USED ON THE WASHO ROAD TEST ARE ANALYZED AND THE METHODS USED BY THE CANADIAN GOOD ROADS ASSOCIATION ARE PRESENTED. THE LATTER METHOD IS PROPOSED TO BE STANDARDIZED AND ADOPTED IN BRAZIL. MODERN METHODS CURRENTLY USED TO DESIGN AND PLAN PAVEMENT OVERLAYS ARE DISCUSSED AND THE TYPES OF DATA WHICH MUST BE OBTAINED IN BRAZIL ARE DESCRIBED.
