AGGREGATES
STATISTICAL METHODS FOR QUALITY CONTROL OF AGGREGATES ARE AVAILABLE, BUT THEIR USE IS DIFFICULT BECAUSE: (1) MOST AGGREGATE PROPERTIES ARE NOT QUANTITATIVELY MEASURABLE AND (2) AGGREGATE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS HAVE NOT BEEN SET AMONG PRODUCERS, CONTRACTORS, AND HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS. STUDIES ARE BEING MADE TO ESTABLISH REALISTIC STATISTICAL BASES FOR ACCEPTANCE FOR SUCH TESTS AS ABSORPTION, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, ABRASION RESISTANCE, AND SOUNDING. GRADING IS THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT AGGREGATE PROPERTY THAT CAN BE ACCURATELY MEASURED, AND IT IS IN THIS AREA WHERE STATISTICAL CONCEPTS SHOW GREATEST PROMISE. BECAUSE ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA ARE AIMED AT SATISFACTORY AGGREGATE PERFORMANCE IN CONCRETE, BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, BASE COURSES, ETC. THE ACCEPTABILITY AT THE POINT OF USE DEPENDS NOT ONLY ON GRADATION AND UNIFORMITY, BUT ON HANDLING AND STORAGE METHODS BETWEEN THE PLANT AND PRODUCTION SITE.
