Finite Element Analyses of Pavement Materials at Or Near Failure: a Constant Bulk Modulus Approach

Military engineers are required to implement design methodologies capable of predicting pavement response data; however, they must develop the response data with a minimal amount of input. Input may be limited due to logistical constraints in the field. Researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have developed a simplified modeling approach, which is being implemented into design criteria. This approach provides response data that is capable of matching responses in the field. This paper summarizes the technical approach, including validation of this procedure using simulations of both laboratory tests performed on pavement materials and tests performed in the field on full-scale airfield pavements. Prediction of pavement responses using this method provided a reasonable match to stresses observed under field loading. Based on the results of this study, this approach will be used to develop updated military pavement design criteria.
