IMPROVED METHOD OF EVALUATING THE FROST RESISTANCE OF AGGREGATES /IN RUSSIAN/
RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE FAILURE OF AGGREGATES DUE TO FROST AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH AND DURABILITY OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURES, AND THE INFLUENCE OF FROST CONDITIONS, AGGREGATE GRADING AND ENVIRONMENT ON THE FROST RESISTANCE OF AGGREGATES. BASED ON DATA RELATING TO THE ACTION OF WATER BELOW FREEZING POINT, A STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT OF THE EFFECT OF ICE ON AGGREGATES, INTERNAL FAILURE OF AGGREGATES DURING FREEZING-THAWING CYCLES AND NUMBER OF FREEZING-THAWING CYCLES. HYDROTHERMAL CONDITIONS IN PAVEMENTS WERE EXAMINED, AND AN ANALYTICAL METHOD IS PROPOSED BASED ON THE STUDY OF THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES. A CALCULATION METHOD USING HYDRAULIC ANALOGIES IS OUTLINED, AND RESULTS OF CALCULATIONS GIVEN FOR ONE RIGID AND ONE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT. A NEW PRINCIPLE IS DEVELOPED FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF CLIMATIC REGIONS DEFINED BY ISOTHERMS OF THE COLDEST MONTH OF THE YEAR. DETAILS ARE ALSO GIVEN OF METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE NUMBER OF FREEZING-THAWING CYCLES IN WHICH AGGREGATES ARE SUBJECTED DURING LABORATORY TESTS. /LCPC/RRL/
