SELECTING THE AGGREGATE SPECIFIC GRAVITY FOR BITUMINOUS PAVING MIXTURES
THREE AGGREGATE SPECIFIC GRAVITIES ARE EMPLOYED FOR THE DESIGN AND CONTROL OF DENSE GRADED BITUMINOUS PAVING MIXTURES: ASTM BULK, ASTM APPARENT, AND 'EFFECTIVE' SPECIFIC GRAVITIES. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT BULK SPECIFIC GRAVITY BE USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THIS SELECTION AS WELL AS FOR THE REJECTION OF ASTM APPARENT SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND EFFECTIVE SPECIFIC GRAVITY.
