AN EVALUATION OF CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL AS A BASE COURSE MATERIAL

THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES WERE STUDIED OF CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL TO DETERMINE ITS SUITABILITY AS A BASE MATERIAL. A LIMEROCK KNOWN TO BE A GOOD BASE MATERIAL WAS SELECTED AS A BASIS FOR COMPARING CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL. ALSO ASSUMING THE CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL MAY BE USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF STABILIZED BASES, A BLEND OF THE CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL AND A SAND TYPICAL OF THE MERRITT ISLAND AREA WAS EVALUATED. LABORATORY TESTS WERE PERFORMED TO DETERMINE MAXIMUM DENSITIES AND OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH AASHO DESIGNATION T-180. THE SOIL SLABS WERE THEN CONSTRUCTED AT OR NEAR THE DESIGN DENSITIES AND DESIGN MOISTURE CONTENTS. LABORATORY TESTS WERE ALSO CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE LOUISIANA BEARING RATIO VALUES OF THE MATERIALS. THE TEST SLABS WERE TESTED AS CONSTRUCTED AND THEN RE-TESTED FOLLOWING A TWO-DAY SATURATION PERIOD WITH BOTH STATIC PLATE BEARING TESTS AND REPETITIVE PLATE BEARING TESTS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT: (1) BLENDING THE CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL WITH A SAND AVAILABLE AT MERRITT ISLAND IN THE PROPORTION OF 75/25 DOES NOT GIVE A BASE MATERIAL COMPARABLE TO LIMEROCK OR THE 100% CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL, AND (2) THE 100% CEMENTED COQUINA SHELL IS NOT QUITE EQUIVALENT TO THE LIMEROCK, BUT IT DOES COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH THE LIMEROCK. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THIS MATERIAL BE ALLOWED AS AN ALTERNATE LIMEROCK BY ADJUSTING THE THICKNESS.
