RESPONSE OF CORRUGATED STEEL PIPE TO EXTERNAL SOIL PRESSURES, WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

FULL-SCALE EXTERNAL LOAD TESTING OF BURIED CORRUGATED STEEL PIPES SHOWS THE STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE LIMITS OF THE SOIL-PIPE SYSTEM. THE TESTS INDICATE THAT THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS INFLUENCING PERFORMANCE ARE THE YIELD POINT STRENGTH OF THE PIPE WALL, THE SOIL COMPRESSIBILITY (DETERMINED PRIMARILY BY SOIL DENSITY), AND THE RING FLEXIBILITY OF THE PIPE. THE EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIP OF THESE 3 FACTORS IS PLOTTED ON A GRAPH FROM WHICH IT IS POSSIBLE TO DESIGN BURIED CORRUGATED STEEL PIPES. /AUTHOR/
