LSTAR: A New Way of Moving for Central and South Texas
Interstate 35 in Texas between Austin and San Antonio is one of the most congested sections of highway in the country. Sixty percent Mexico’s trade with the U.S. and Canada uses this stretch of road along with three million local residents. Thirty through freight trains and five or six local trains use the freight rail corridor between San Antonio and Austin. A solution to the congestion, proposed by the Lone Star Rail District, is the LSTAR, a 117-mile passenger rail service with 16 stations extending from Georgetown in the north to near the Texas A&M campus in the south with a freight rail bypass to divert the 30 daily through trains to free up space for the local passenger trains.
