IMPROVED OPERATION AND SIMPLIFIED MAINTENANCE OF STERN GEAR BY THE USE OF SPLIT STERN BEARINGS
During recent years, the frequently recurring operating problems with stern tubes and oil seals have demonstrated the need for improved stern bearing designs. The growth in size of propellers and shafting has made their removal more difficult and time-consuming and, hence, more costly. Methods of reducing off-hire time are continually being sought, e.g., underwater cleaning and painting of ships' hulls, and new stern bearing designs must offer minimum maintenance times in addition to giving improved operation. The split stern bearings described here enable full maintenance and survey to be carried out without disconnecting either the propeller or line shafting.
