VERY HEAVY AIRCRAFT LOADS ON PIPE INSTALLED BENEATH RIGID PAVEMENTS
THE MAIN PHASES OF THE PIPE COVER STUDY HAVE BEEN FIRST, THE REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF THEORETICAL CONCEPTS, SUCH AS THOSE ADVOCATED BY SPANGLER, BARON, AND BOUSSINESQ, AND OBSERVATION OF PERFORMANCE OF PIPE INSTALLED IN CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND OTHER PROJECTS. NEXT, TESTS WERE PERFORMED ON 12-IN. CORRUGATED METAL AND CLAY PIPE INSTALLATIONS UNDER SHALLOW COVER, SPECIFICALLY TO VALIDATE LIVE LOAD DESIGN CRITERIA. THESE TESTS, EMPLOYING A 50,000 LB. TWIN-WHEEL LOAD, WERE RUN AS SATELLITE STUDIES OF PAVEMENT AND PREFABRICATED SURFACING INVESTIGATIONS PERFORMED AT THE U. S. ARMY ENGINEER WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION. /AUTHOR/
