THERMOSETTING SYNTHETIC-RESIN PAINTS FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENT MARKINGS
CONCRETE PAINTS FAIL PRINCIPALLY BY SCALING DUE TO LOSS OF ADHESION BETWEEN THE POINT FILM AND THE CONCRETE IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER. THE WATER COMES UP FROM THE MOIST SOIL BENEATH THE PAVEMENT, CARRYING SOLUBLE SALTS WITH IT, WHICH ARE DEPOSITED UPON EVAPORATION OF THE WATER AT THE CONCRETE SURFACE. THE PAINT FILM OFFERS RESISTANCE TO THE PASSAGE OF THE WATER VAPOR AND TO THE GROWTH OF THE SALT CRYSTALS, AND THE RESULTING FORCES MAY BREAK THE BOND BETWEEN POINT AND CONCRETE, PERHAPS DISINTEGRATING THE SURFACE OF THE CONCRETE ITSELF. THERMOSETTING AND THERMOPLASTIC SYNTHETIC RESIN PAINTS HAVE FAR BETTER WATER, ALKALI, AND ABRASION RESISTANCE THAN STANDARD PAINTS. /AUTHOR/
