Research and Development Toward Wear Reduction of Current Collecting System
Research and development is being done on how to reduce wear on both rail contact lines and pantographs. Such reduction should extend their lifespans and enhance electrical current collection for locomotives and EMUs. The author examines two approaches to reducing pantograph wear for lifespan extension. The first approach involves modifying pantograph heads and springs to improve compliance characteristics, enabling arcing rates to be decreased. The second approach involves improving wear resistance and impact reduction on contact wire through contact strips. To do this, new contact strip materials need to be developed. These optimization approaches are currently being studied, and have thus far been showing success.
